There is a considerable economic cost associated with dementia estimated at £23 billion a year, which is predicted to triple by 2040. This is more than the cost of cancer, heart disease and stroke.6

Facing facts

Dementia is already a major health challenge for the UK.
It’s only going to get bigger.

The impact on caregivers

Anything we can do to relieve the burden of care or reduce the suffering of those living with dementia has got to be worth it…

Unpaid carers, or families and friends providing care to their loved ones, are providing care to a value of

£13.9 billion a year.12

This will increase to

£35.7 billion by 2040.12

1 in 3

people will care for someone with dementia in their lifetime.6

Family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s and related dementias are at greater risk of anxiety, depression, and poorer quality of life than caregivers of people with other conditions.13

In 2021

700,000

unpaid carers provided an estimated 1.3 billion hours of unpaid care to those with dementia.14

Dementia costs can be catastrophic for families too. An individual with dementia spends an average

£100,000 on social care.12
