As dementia already affects nearly 1 million people in the UK, it’s something we simply have to start talking about.4

Understanding the different types of dementia

There are many forms of dementia and we have listed
the most common types below.

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Vascular dementia
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies
  • Frontotemporal dementia
  • Mixed dementia
  • Young-onset dementia
  • Parkinson’s disease dementia

There are also rarer types of dementia that are caused by other diseases and conditions. Knowing more helps us better support our loved one’s along their journey.

What can we do?

1

Can we help delay progression of dementia?

If you’re under 65 years old, we can think about living a healthy lifestyle to help reduce the risk factors of certain types of dementia. If you’re older, we can aim to slow the progression of dementia.

Dementia can’t be prevented, but some things may help reduce our risk of getting it or delay the onset of dementia. These include eating a healthier diet, doing more exercise, cutting out smoking and wearing hearing aids to reduce social isolation.5

In our social groups, sports clubs, community groups and friendship circles, we can help each other by encouraging and supporting healthier lifestyles, and simply by talking more openly about dementia.

Can we diagnose dementia sooner?

An early diagnosis will help!

Although there’s no cure, an early diagnosis can make a significant difference to how well someone responds to treatment. And of course, to their quality of life.

The Let’s talk Dementia campaign aims to help those on their dementia journey to find help, support & information.

Can we make small changes that
can make a big difference?

Make life better for those living with dementia

It’s vital to keep people engaged in their communities for as long as possible.

  • Talk to them. Be patient, share old memories, don’t correct details.
  • Share music. Play old songs, watch old films.
  • Play games with them. Do crosswords, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles.
  • Exercise with them. Take short walks, try gentle throw/catch games.
  • Help their diet. Encourage healthy eating. Reduce alcohol.
  • Environment. Minimise mirrors to reduce potential sources of confusion and distress.

Make life better for carers

Families that devote themselves to caring for a loved one with dementia need all the support they can get.

  • Talk to them. Find out what they need, what they fear, what makes them smile.
  • Be a friend. Sit with them. Go out together if possible. Provide some respite care.
  • Share helpful tips and strategies. Without being pushy, offer support by sharing useful advice and experiences that may help them navigate their caring journey.
  • Look for options. Be willing to seek professional advice about things they can try.
  • Small wins. Even the smallest relief can have a major impact.
